Can I just steam on the grill?
The grill is designed to steam on one side and grill on the other. The hot air from the sear side may impact steaming performance if there is no food being grilled to absorb the heat. If you’d like to steam alone without grilling, you can steam on the whole grill by using the Versatility Expansion Kit (sold separately).
Is food supposed to brown while steaming?
Browning food may indicate that it is not steaming properly. We recommend grilling food on high while steaming for optimal performance. If you’d like to steam alone without grilling, you can steam on the whole grill by using the Versatility Expansion Kit (sold separately).
How/what do you steam? Why does steaming take longer?
The steam system is intended to work with smaller, bite-sized or delicate food. Because Lumin electric grill / Lumin Compact electric grill is designed to grill and steam at the same time, steamed food may take longer than it would with a traditional steamer.
Get the most out of your steam system:
- Cut or trim your vegetables into small, bite-sized pieces before placing onto the steam tray
- Place food items in a single layer
- Keep the lid closed as much as possible while steaming
- We do not recommend using the steam system on harder vegetables such as potatoes or butternut squash
Will steaming differ on this grill vs stovetop steamer, steaming appliance, or microwave?
Yes. Since the grill is vented, adjust the cooking time roughly 3-5 minutes more than what you would do in a stove or microwave.
Why does the tray have to be on the right side when steaming, but on the left side while smoking?
When steaming, the steam pan full of water will keep the thermometer on the controller cooler, which will improve performance of the heating elements. When smoking, there is no water to keep the thermometer cool, so we recommend that the open grates be placed over the controller-side of the grill to allow for the airflow to keep it cool.
