To ensure safe operation and prevent accidents, follow these important safety guidelines when using your Weber Spirit grill:
General Safety Guidelines
- Use Outdoors Only: Operate the barbecue in a well-ventilated area. Do not use it in enclosed spaces such as garages, buildings, breezeways, tents, or under overhead combustible structures.
- Read Instructions: Thoroughly read the Owner’s Manual before using the barbecue.
- Retain Instructions: Keep the Owner’s Manual for future reference.
- Do Not Modify the Grill: Do not alter or modify the appliance or its parts. Using natural gas in an LPG unit or vice versa is unsafe and voids the warranty.
Gas Safety
- If You Smell Gas:
- Shut off the gas supply to the barbecue.
- Extinguish any open flames.
- Open the lid.
- If the smell persists, move away from the barbecue and contact your gas supplier or emergency fire services immediately.
- Gas Leak Check: Perform a leak check every time the LPG cylinder is refilled or reinstalled. Use a soap and water solution to check for bubbles at connection points.
- Cylinder Safety:
- Use LPG cylinders with a capacity between 3 kg and 13 kg.
- Store LPG cylinders outdoors, out of reach of children, and away from enclosed spaces like garages or buildings.
- Do not store a spare LPG cylinder under or near the barbecue.
- Never fill the cylinder beyond 80% capacity.
- Regulator and Hose: Ensure the regulator and hose are in good condition. Replace them every five years or sooner if damaged.
Operation Safety
- Preheating: Always preheat the barbecue with the lid closed for 15 minutes before cooking.
- Clearance: Keep combustible materials at least 61 cm (24 inches) away from the back and sides of the barbecue.
- Flammable Materials: Keep the cooking area clear of flammable vapours, liquids (e.g., petrol, alcohol), and materials.
- Grease Fires: In case of a grease fire, turn off all burners and keep the lid closed until the fire is extinguished.
- Hot Surfaces: Accessible parts may become very hot during use. Keep children and pets away from the barbecue.
- Heat-Resistant Gloves: Use heat-resistant barbecue mitts or gloves (conforming to EN 407, Contact Heat rating level 2 or greater) when operating the barbecue.
- Unattended Use: Never leave the barbecue unattended during preheating or cooking.
- Moving the Barbecue: Do not move the barbecue while it is in use.
Storage and Non-Use
- Turn Off Gas Supply: Always turn off the gas supply at the LPG cylinder after use.
- Indoor Storage: Store the barbecue indoors only if the LPG cylinder is disconnected and removed.
- Check After Storage: After a period of non-use, inspect the barbecue for gas leaks and burner obstructions before using it again.
Additional Precautions
- Avoid Charcoal or Lava Rocks: Do not use charcoal, briquettes, or lava rocks in the barbecue.
- Alcohol and Drugs: Avoid using the barbecue if under the influence of alcohol, prescription drugs, or other substances that may impair judgment.
- Ventilation: Keep ventilation openings around the LPG cylinder clear and free of debris.
- Inspect Components: Regularly check the hose, burners, and other components for damage or wear. Replace damaged parts with Weber-authorised replacements.
- Avoid Water Damage: Do not spray the barbecue with a steady water stream, such as from a garden hose or power washer, as it may damage electronic components.
Emergency Situations
- Gas Leak or Hissing Sound: If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound:
- Move away from the barbecue and LPG cylinder.
- Do not attempt to fix the issue yourself.
- Call emergency fire services immediately.
- Flare-Ups: If flare-ups occur, preheat the barbecue properly and clean the inside thoroughly to remove grease and food residue.
By adhering to these safety guidelines, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable barbecuing experience with your Weber Spirit grill.
